SCPD Hate Crimes Unit Presentations

May 20, 2024

“We don’t want a five second decision to affect the rest of your life.”

In an effort to continue strengthening the SCSD approach in educating students about the serious nature of some of the recent graffiti incidents, Suffolk County Police Department Detective, James Mosby, of the SCPD’s Hate Crime Unit, is conducting grade-level presentations Monday and Tuesday at High School West and High School East.

Detective Mosby’s presentation, which has been delivered at a number of school districts, focuses on the specific nature of hate crimes and the legal consequences of these actions.

“Once someone is charged with a hate crime that name is always there,” he told the students.

Earlier this year, when meetings were held with our high school Leadership students, one of the suggestions offered to help strengthen our approach in this area was presentations by law enforcement so students could be educated on the legal consequences of actions that can be perceived as hate crimes.

Detective Mosby lauded the 糖心Vlog School District’s efforts in strengthening education about hate crimes.

“This is a safe space school district and we want a safe environment for students.”
