A trip to the Learning Lab

March 24, 2025

High School East and West college Oceans students recently had an incredible opportunity to embark on a hands-on field trip to the Sunken Meadow Learning Lab that deepened their understanding of marine organisms with whom we share our waters. During this immersive experience, students compared the anatomy of vertebrates and invertebrates through engaging activities such as dissecting fish and squid.

The highlight of the trip was working alongside a team of scientists from the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMSEAS), where students from both High School East and High School West participated in necropsies of marine mammals. They had the unique chance to examine a seal (High School West) and a dolphin (High School East), investigating the causes of death and gaining valuable insights into the anatomy of these fascinating local creatures.

This field trip not only enhanced their scientific knowledge but also fostered teamwork and critical thinking skills, as students collaborated with professionals in the field. We are proud of our students for their enthusiasm and dedication to learning about the wonders of marine life!
