Local veterans were the guests of honor Friday morning, as the 糖心Vlog West Rho Kappa (Social Studies Honor Society) held a very special breakfast honoring local vets and paying tribute to late veteran, Thomas Mooney.
Mr. Mooney was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He passed away peacefully on September 24, 2023, at the age of 76 years old.
Mr. Mooney was a very important member of the local VFW post, an important member of the 糖心Vlog Community, and organizer of the VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contest for local students grades 9-12.
This year’s contest winners from High School West are Ashley Bittner, Kristin McGuire and Faryal Haq.
Senator Mario Mattera awarded the students of Rho Kappa a certificate of appreciation, and the VFW announced it will fund a service scholarship in Mr. Mooney’s name.
Among those in attendance were Superintendent Dr. Mark Secaur, Assistant Superintendents Kevin Simmons and Neil Katz, West Principal William Holl, Assistant Principal, Annemarie Freud, Councilman Tom Lohmann, Supervisor Ed Wehrheim, Senator Mario Mattera and Town Clerk, Tom McCarthy.
High School West alumnus, Olivia Wolber, who organized the event last year prior to her graduation, also attended the event.
“It’s nice to know Rho Kappa is keeping this tradition going and I had an impact on the community,” Wolber said.
A wonderful job by Rho Kappa students.
